Our initial idea started from a dance scene, which ultimately also became the centre of our animation, we then went on to discuss the stories behind the scenes, its characters. It was at this point with the help of Jess that we decided on the story of grief and unrequited love between two lovers. However there was still much to explore in terms of their back story.
We came up with several different versions of the story and ultimately decided to focus on the female lead drowning and her fiancĂ© unable to face her death. There was also another version where it was a much more tragic ending, the female lead is shot and bleeds to death, this was rejected by almost the entire group but the tutors wanted us to explore this idea; after careful consideration we decided that it was too graphic and didn’t match with the emotions we wanted to convey, the death scene would be to overwhelming and diminish other scenes within the animation. However, the project took a complete turn after Christmas when Bok decided to change our entire animatic without telling the group, we went back to our very first idea, the female lead dies of a disease and her fiancĂ© is unable to save her because he is away at war. This leaves him devastated and dreams of reuniting with her every year on the day of her funeral.
From there on we started a new animatic and followed through with that.
